Nautical Term: Lifting
Definition of Lifting
Lifting refers to the process of transferring marks and measurements from a source, such as a drawing or model, to a target, like a plate or other object. This is accomplished using templates, stencils, or other means, ensuring precision and accuracy in the transferred marks and measurements.
For example, in the construction of a ship, the design specifications are first translated onto a large-scale drawing. The shipbuilder then uses this drawing as a template to mark and transfer the necessary measurements and details to the actual hull of the ship. This process is referred to as lifting the marks and measurements from the drawing to the hull of the ship.
