Nautical Term: Margin plate
Definition of Margin plate
A margin plate is a longitudinal plate that seals the ends of the floors, specifically along the wales or sidewalls, within the ship’s width. For instance, in the construction of a wooden sailing ship, the margin plates would be attached to the undersides of the wales or sidewalls, and then the ends of the floors would be fastened to the margin plates, effectively closing off the floors at the wales or sidewalls.
