Nautical Term: Mast step

Definition of Mast step

The mast step refers to the framed structure located on the keelson of a boat (not applicable to ships). This step serves as the point of contact for the mast’s heel, ensuring a secure and stable fit.

For instance, while constructing a sailboat, the mast step plays a crucial role in the mast assembly process. After the keelson is set and secured, the mast step is positioned, and the mast is subsequently lowered onto the step. With the mast properly and securely fitted to the mast step, the sailboat is now prepared for the rigging of the sails and other necessary finishing touches.
