Nautical Term: Mooring

Definition of Mooring

Mooring is the act of securing a watercraft to a docking station, a buoy, or through the use of two anchors.

For instance, a sailor preparing to dock his boat during a storm would first assess the wind and wave conditions. He would then maneuver his boat towards the dock while one crewmember secures a mooring line to a cleat on the dock, while another crewmember throws an additional mooring line to a mooring buoy nearby. Once both lines are secure, the sailor can safely step ashore, confident that his boat is securely moored.
