Nautical Term: OBS

Definition of OBS

Observation at Sea (OBS) refers to the systematic and continuous observation of the surrounding environment during sea travel. This includes observing weather patterns, sea conditions, and potential hazards such as other vessels, submerged objects, or ice formations.

For example, during a transatlantic voyage, the ship’s OBS team notices dark clouds forming on the horizon. Upon closer inspection, they determine that the clouds are indicative of an approaching storm system. Based on this observation, the ship’s captain decides to alter the vessel’s course to avoid the potential hazards associated with the approaching storm system.
