Definition of ODS
Ozone Depleting Substances, commonly referred to as ODS, are a group of synthetic chemicals that significantly contribute to the depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer. These substances contain chlorine or bromine atoms, which become reactive in the ozone layer and catalyze the destruction of ozone molecules.
An example of how ODS might be used in a single paragraph could be: In the 1980s, the use of Ozone Depleting Substances, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), became widespread in various industries, including refrigeration, air conditioning, and insulation. Unfortunately, it was later discovered that these ODS contribute significantly to the depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer. As a result, international efforts have been made to phase out the use of ODS and to replace them with more environmentally-friendly alternatives.
