Definition of Packers
Packers are specialized workers who fit various materials, such as lamp wicking, tarred felt, or other insulating substances, into the gaps and joints of a ship’s structure. This meticulous process ensures that the ship’s structure remains water or oil tight, thus contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of the vessel.
For instance, during a routine maintenance check, the crew noticed that the watertight seal between the ship’s hull and the engine room had deteriorated. In response, the crew called upon the packers to reseal the gap with fresh tarred felt and ensure that the engine room remained watertight.
