Nautical Term: Plating

Definition of Plating

Plating refers to the individual steel plates that collectively form the protective outer shell or skin of a vessel. For instance, during the construction of a large cargo ship, the hull is built up layer by layer using thousands of steel plates, which, when secured together, create a strong, watertight outer shell for the vessel.
