Nautical Term: Plug
Definition of Plug
A ‘plug’ is a wooden wedge specifically designed to fit snugly into a drainage hole located at the bottom of a boat. The primary function of a boat plug is to facilitate the draining of the boat when it is out of water, such as when the boat is on a dry dock or beach.
For instance, let’s consider a scenario where a small sailboat needs to be hauled out of the water for routine maintenance. In this case, the boat owner would first remove the drain plug from the bottom of the boat. As the water begins to drain out, the boat would be gently raised onto a dry dock or landing gear. Once the boat is safely out of the water, the boat owner would reinstall the drain plug to prevent any further water from escaping.
