Nautical Term: Quarter

Definition of Quarter

Quarter refers to a specific side of a ship. The term applies to both the aft (rear) and forward (front) sides of the ship. More precisely, the aft quarter is the side of the ship between the main midship frames and the stern. Similarly, the forward quarter is the side of the ship between the main frames and the stem.

Example: During the storm, the crew secured the aft quarter of the ship by reefing the sails and tying them down. They also secured the forward quarter by doubling the mooring lines and adding extra anchors.
