Definition of Quarters

Quarters refer to living spaces for passengers or crew members on a ship or vessel. These spaces include, but are not limited to, staterooms, dining salons, mess rooms, lounging places, passages connected with the foregoing, individual stations for personnel for fire or boat drill, and so on. For instance, during a shipboard inspection, the chief engineer might direct his crew to ensure that all engine room quarters are clean, orderly, and adequately supplied with tools, spare parts, and other essentials.
