Nautical Term: Rake

Definition of Rake

Rake refers to the angled pitch of a ship’s stem, or the forward part of the ship. Conversely, the term also refers to the slope or backward incline of a ship’s stern. For example, if a shipbuilder notices that the stem of a newly built ship is pitching too far forward, they might decide to adjust the rake of the ship’s stem to improve its overall stability and seaworthiness.
