Nautical Term: Rudder stop
Definition of Rudder stop
A rudder stop is a mechanical device fitted to the rudder of a ship to limit the swing of the rudder. This prevents the rudder from being deflected too far in strong currents or winds, which could lead to instability or loss of control of the ship. For example, during a docking maneuver, the captain might use the rudder stop to limit the swing of the rudder and maintain the alignment of the ship with the dock.
