Nautical Term: Scarfing

Definition of Scarfing

Scarfing is a specialized method of joining two separate pieces of material by removing a portion from each piece. This process results in seamless integration between the two pieces.

For instance, when constructing a large ship, the hull and the deck may need to be joined together using the scarfing technique. By carefully removing a portion of each piece and fitting them together seamlessly, the resulting joint will be strong and resilient, able to withstand the rigors of life at sea.
