Definition of Shelter deck
The term ‘shelter deck’ refers to a deck that is fitted from stem to stern on a relatively light superstructure. This deck, also known as the main deck, provides shelter and protection to the crew and cargo on board a vessel.
For instance, in a cargo ship, the shelter deck would be the main deck where the crew would live and work. The cargo would be stored on the decks above the shelter deck.
