Definition of Skin
The term ‘skin’ in nautical language refers to the plating of a ship, both on the inside and outside. While the inside skin is sometimes called the ceiling, the outside skin is referred to as the case. This skin is made up of steel plates that are laid in alternate inside and outside strakes.
For example, During the ship’s dry docking, the condition of the skin was inspected. The inside skin, or ceiling, showed signs of water damage and rust, indicating the need for repairs. The outside skin, or case, appeared to be in good condition, with no signs of significant damage or rust.
