Definition of Slack

Slack refers to the section of a rope or a chain that is hanging loosely. This term is commonly used s, for instance, when a sailor needs to adjust the tension in a rope or a cable. For example, a sailor might say, I need to add more tension to the mainsail sheet, but first, I have to let out some slack in the rope.
