Nautical Term: Slip

Definition of Slip

A slip refers to the act of releasing or unshackling something, most commonly a cable or mooring line.

For instance, upon arrival at a marina, a crew member would secure the mooring line to a bollard on the dock and then attach the other end of the line to the boat. Once they have confirmed that the boat is securely moored, the crew member would then give the order to slip the mooring line, which would allow the boat to be freed from its mooring and ready to set sail.
