Definition of SMC

The Safety Management Certificate (SMC), is an internationally recognized document that verifies a vessel or a fleet’s adherence to a Safety Management System (SMS). The SMS is a set of policies, procedures, and records that is designed to ensure the safety of a vessel and its crew. For example, a cargo ship’s SMC would confirm that the vessel has a comprehensive SMS in place, which includes regular drills and inspections to ensure the safety of the crew and the cargo.
