Nautical Term: Spotting

Definition of Spotting

Identifying and designating a specific location on a vessel for the purpose of loading or unloading cargo. For example, during the loading process of a container ship, the crew members must first identify the appropriate locations on the ship for loading each container. Once these locations have been identified and designated as spots, the crew members can then begin the actual process of loading each container onto the ship at its designated spot.
