Tonnes per centimetre immersion (TPC)

Nautical Term: Tonnes per centimetre immersion (TPC)

Definition of Tonnes per centimetre immersion (TPC)

Tonnes per centimetre immersion (TPC) is a term used in the maritime industry to describe the relationship between the weight of a ship and the depth of water it is displacing.

When the draught of a ship is increased by 1 cm, the ship will experience an additional buoyancy due to the increased water displacement.

For example, a container ship with a TPC of 25 tonnes per centimetre, and a draught of 12 meters, will experience an additional buoyancy of 150 tonnes (5 tonnes x 30 cm) when the draught is increased by 30 cm (1 foot) to 13 meters.
