Nautical Term: Unwatched
Definition of Unwatched
The term ‘unwatched’ refers to a lighthouse or navigational beacon that is not currently attended by a keeper or automated system. This contrasts with a ‘watched’ or ‘attended’ lighthouse, where the beacon is being actively monitored and maintained.
For example, during a severe storm, the lighthouse keeper may be forced to evacuate the lighthouse due to dangerous conditions. In such a situation, the lighthouse would be considered ‘unwatched’ as there would be no one actively monitoring or maintaining the lighthouse or its beacon during this time.
