Nautical Term: Ventilator cowl
Definition of Ventilator cowl
A ventilator cowl is a swiveled, cover or hood atop a ventilator. This cowl allows the ventilator’s sail or hood to be turned or adjusted as needed to catch the wind effectively.
For instance, imagine a sailboat negotiating rough waters. The sailor, recognizing the importance of maintaining adequate ventilation to prevent water from entering the hull, turns to the ventilator cowl atop the boat’s ventilator. By carefully adjusting the cowl, the sailor is able to optimize the ventilator’s ability to catch the wind, ensuring the boat remains dry and the sailor stays safe.
