Definition of Void space

…Void space refers to an intentionally empty enclosed area, often watertight, within a ship or other floating vessel. An example of void space usage might be found in a cargo ship where the hold is designed to be empty for the transportation of goods. When the cargo is loaded, the hold transforms from void space to enclosed cargo space.
