Nautical Term: VRM

Definition of VRM

A Variable Range Marker (VRM) is a type of navigational aid used at sea. VRMs differ from fixed range marks in that their range is adjustable. This feature makes VRMs particularly useful in areas with changing water depths or where accurate navigation over short distances is required.

For example, a VRM could be used by a fishing vessel navigating through a shallow and complex reef system. By adjusting the range of the VRM, the fishermen could accurately navigate around the reef, avoid grounding, and maximize their fishing efficiency.
