Nautical Term: Wildcat

Definition of Wildcat

A component of a windlass, specifically a wheel with teeth or sprockets, which engages the windlass chain. This mechanism, known as a wildcat or windlass sprocket, simplifies the process of winding in the chain and anchor.

For example, while sailing in rough seas, the anchor chain suddenly became entangled in the propeller. The captain immediately ordered the crew to wind in the chain and disentangle it from the propeller. With the help of the wildcat, the crew was able to wind in the chain quickly and efficiently, allowing the captain to order the engine to be restarted and sail out of the dangerous waters.
