Nautical Term: Wiper

Definition of Wiper

A wiper is a sailor or crew member responsible for maintaining and repairing various equipment and systems aboard a ship, particularly in the engine room.

For instance, during a long voyage, the engine room wiper notices a small leak in one of the engine’s water jackets. The wiper quickly identifies the source of the leak and replaces the faulty gasket to prevent further damage and ensure the engine continues to run smoothly.
