Nautical Term: Fore peak

Definition of Fore peak

The forepeak of a vessel refers to the narrow, pointed extension of the bow. This forepeak not only forms the aesthetically pleasing front of the ship, but it also functions as a space for storing cargo or supplies, known as the forepeak hold.

For instance, in the cargo handling operations of a merchant vessel, the forepeak hold would be utilized to stow away perishable or bulk cargoes, like fruits, vegetables, or grain. These cargoes would be carefully loaded into the forepeak hold using cargo handling equipment, like cranes or forklifts, to ensure that the weight and volume distribution inside the hold is optimal for the safe and efficient transport of the cargo. Once the cargo is safely stowed away in the forepeak hold, the vessel would then set sail to its next destination, where the cargo would be unloaded and distributed to its final destination consumers.
