Definition of Jump ship

To abandon a ship without proper authorization or permission from the ship’s captain or crew. This act is considered desertion.

For example, a sailor may feel compelled to jump ship if they believe the ship is in imminent danger and the captain or crew are not taking appropriate action to ensure the safety of the ship and its crew.
