Nautical Term: Run

Definition of Run

The term ‘run’ in nautical language refers to the narrowing sides of a vessel toward the aft end. These sides meet at the hooding-ends. For example, if a sailor notices that the run of their vessel’s starboard side has narrowed significantly, they may suspect that they are approaching a lee shore or that there is a strong current running against their vessel.
