Nautical Term: Swash bulkhead (plate)
Definition of Swash bulkhead (plate)
A swash bulkhead, also referred to as a swash plate, is a perforated and semi-circular bulkhead installed in a tank or compartment. Its primary function is to minimize the sloshing or surging of the liquid contents, thereby enhancing the stability and safety of the vessel or structure.
For instance, consider a large fuel tank installed in the lower deck of a cargo ship. To prevent the fuel from sloshing excessively during rough seas, the tank is fitted with a swash bulkhead along its longitudinal axis. This bulkhead, through its semi-circular shape and perforations, effectively reduces the sloshing of the fuel, thereby ensuring the stability and safety of the cargo ship during its voyage.
