Nautical Term: Watch cap
Definition of Watch cap
A watch cap is a type of sailor’s headwear, typically made of wool. This hat is designed to cover the ears in cold weather. Additionally, a watch cap can also refer to a canvas cover that is secured over a funnel when not in use. For example, a sailor might wear a woolen watch cap to keep warm in cold weather, while the ship’s funnel would be covered with a canvas watch cap to keep the funnel clean and free of debris when not in use.
