Nautical Term: AIO
Definition of AIO
Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO): This is an advanced navigational tool used in maritime communications. It provides real-time situational awareness by overlaying essential navigational data, such as charts, navigational warnings, and other relevant information, onto the user’s display or chart table.
Example: During a transatlantic voyage, the captain of a cargo ship receives an Admiralty Information Overlay message warning of heavy ice floes ahead. With the AIO system, the captain can instantly view an overlay of the warning message on the ship’s electronic chart display. The captain can then take appropriate action, such as rerouting the ship to avoid the ice floes or slowing down the ship’s speed to minimize the risk of damage from the ice floes.
