Nautical Term: Air port

Definition of Air port

An air port is a circular opening in the side of a ship or a deck house, fitted with a hinged frame and a thick glass light. The primary function of an air port is to provide adequate ventilation and light to the interior spaces of a ship.

For instance, in a Parcel Tanker, the cargo tanks are isolated from the ship’s structure and exterior environment. The air ports located at the top of the cargo tanks serve as the only means for providing light, ventilation, and vision to the cargo tanks’ internal spaces and to the crew monitoring the tanks from the ship’s control room.
