Definition of Apron
An additional protective plate, known as an apron, is installed in the continuation of the shell plating above the forecastle sheer strake at the stem. In some cases, these plates are fitted one on each side of the stem, and they serve as a foundation for the bow mooring pipes. By providing an extra layer of protection, the apron helps prevent damage to the vessel’s critical structural components.
For example, during a rough sea voyage, the impact of heavy waves against the stem of a ship may result in significant damage to the vessel’s structural components. However, by installing an apron on the stem of the ship, the risk of such damage can be significantly reduced, allowing the vessel to safely navigate through even the most challenging sea conditions.
