Definition of Bilge keel
A non-retractable, elongated fin that extends from the bilge area of a ship. Its primary function is to minimize the rolling motion of the vessel.
For instance, a large cargo ship sailing in rough seas may experience significant rolling. To help mitigate this, the ship’s captain may deploy bilge keels. These keels, once extended from the bilge, provide increased underwater resistance. This resistance, in turn, helps to dampen the rolling motion of the ship, making for a safer and more comfortable journey for all aboard.
