Definition of BWAD

Brackish Water Arrival Draft refers to a preliminary plan or document outlining the procedures to be followed when brackish water enters a vessel’s ballast tanks.

For example, consider a cargo ship that has sailed from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. During the voyage, the ship has taken on fresh water to replenish the water supply for the crew and the ship’s engines.

However, as the ship enters the Mediterranean Sea, the salinity level of the water begins to increase. As a result, the fresh water in the ship’s ballast tanks begins to mix with the brackish water in the Mediterranean Sea.
