Definition of By the Run

To release a mooring or an anchor completely, allowing the vessel to be carried by the current or the wind, is referred to as ‘By the Run’ in nautical terminology.

For instance, a captain may decide to set sail By the Run while anchored in a peaceful cove. Once the anchor is released, the vessel is carried by the current, allowing the crew to enjoy the scenic beauty of the surrounding area.
