Nautical Term: Where away
Definition of Where away
A call made from one ship to another, inquiring about the direction of an object, in response to a lookout’s report of having sighted the object.
For instance, in a foggy night, the lookout of a cargo ship, named Seafarer, reports having sighted a buoy. The cargo ship Seawander, which is following Seafarer, makes a where away call to Seafarer, asking for the direction of the buoy, in order for Seawander to adjust its course accordingly.
