Nautical Term: Cleat
Definition of Cleat
A cleat is a metal fitting used extensively on boats. It is designed with two projecting arms or horns. These arms provide a secure attachment point for a halyard or other rope.
The deck, side plating, a stanchion, or other convenient structure serves as a support for securing the cleat. For instance, a sailor may secure a cleat to the deck using bolts and then attach a halyard to the cleat to hoist a sail.
