Nautical Term: Topping lift
Definition of Topping lift
A topping lift is a rope or chain that runs from the head of a boom or gaff to the mast or the vessel’s structure. The primary function of a topping lift is to support the weight of the boom or gaff and its loads. This allows the loads to be hoisted to a certain level, while the topping lift maintains the boom or gaff in a stable position. For example, a sailing vessel may use a topping lift to support the boom of its mainsail while hoisting the sail to the desired height.
