Nautical Term: Coaming
Definition of Coaming
【Strictly defining coamings, I’d like to clarify that coamings refer to the fore and aft framing in hatchways and scuttles. The athwartship pieces, on the other hand, are called head ladges. However, it’s important to note that the term coaming is commonly applied to all raised framework about deck openings. Coamings prevent water from running below and strengthen the deck about the hatches. For example, a boat’s cockpit may have coamings that provide a raised seating area while keeping the water out.】
