Definition of Sailing free

Sailing other than close to the wind is a term used in sailing to describe a situation where the sailboat is not sailing as close to the wind as possible.

For example, in the following paragraph, the sailboat is not sailing free or as close to the wind as possible:

The racing yacht was sailing other than close to the wind as it tacked towards the finish line, with the crew frantically adjusting the sails to catch the wind as effectively as possible.
