Definition of Fake down

To simulate the act of pulling in a line back and forth on the deck, this nautical term is called ‘fake down’. For instance, during a sailboat race, a crew member might call out ‘fake down’ to confuse the opposing team, who may assume that the crew is actually pulling in the sails.
