Nautical Term: Cross-spall

Definition of Cross-spall

A cross-spall is a temporary, horizontally installed timber brace, which is employed to maintain a frame in its intended position during the shipbuilding process. Cross-spalls are eventually replaced by the more permanent deck beams.

For instance, while constructing a ship, the carpenter may install a frame made of oak timbers. However, since the frame is not yet connected to the deck beams, it may be susceptible to shifting or moving out of position. To mitigate this risk, the carpenter may install a cross-spall, a horizontal timber brace, across the top of the frame. This temporary brace will help to maintain the frame in its intended position until the more permanent deck beams can be installed.
