Nautical Term: Fake

Definition of Fake

A ‘fake turn’ refers to an incomplete turn of a rope during the process of coiling it down. This term is used to differentiate between a full turn, which contributes to the formation of a compact coil, and an incomplete turn, which can loosen the coil and create unwanted slack.

For example, if a sailor is coiling a rope and mistakenly makes a fake turn instead of a full turn, the coil may become looser and less compact, resulting in additional slack that could potentially cause safety concerns or impede the efficiency of the sailing operation.
