Definition of Housing

Housing refers to that section of a mast that is situated below the upper deck’s surface. For example, in the following paragraph, the term housing is used to describe the section of the mast that is submerged below the upper deck.

The tall mast on the schooner gleamed in the sunlight. The rigging seemed to dance as the wind filled the sails. The captain stood near the helm, eyeing the weather and considering the position of the ship’s ‘housing,” or the portion of the mast situated below the upper deck’s surface.
