Nautical Term: Fantail

Definition of Fantail

A fantail is an extended section of a vessel’s stern that overhangs the water. This structure typically extends from the stern post, located near the vessel’s centerline, all the way to the stern. For example, a large cargo ship may have a fantail that helps to stabilize the vessel during heavy loading or rough seas.
