Nautical Term: Calk

Definition of Calk

:To securely fasten a lap or other seam on a boat using a chisel tool, this process can be carried out manually by hand or mechanically with the help of additional tools.

For instance, imagine a shipwright working on the hull of a boat. He notices that the seam where two planks meet has come loose. To fix this issue, the shipwright uses a wooden mallet and a caulking chisel. He applies pressure to the chisel, forcing a strip of caulking material into the seam. After the caulking material has been applied and has expanded slightly to fill the gap, the shipwright taps the seam gently with a hammer to ensure that the caulking material has adhered securely to the seam. Once he is satisfied that the seam is now securely fastened, the shipwright moves on to the next repair job on the hull of the boat.
