Nautical Term: Fouled hawse

Definition of Fouled hawse

1. The term Fouled hawse is used to describe a situation where an anchor chain, when a vessel is moored, does not lead clear of another chain, resulting in a fouled hawse.

Example: During a heavy rainstorm, a large commercial fishing vessel failed to properly secure its mooring lines. As a result, the anchor chain of one of the vessels fouled the anchor chain of another vessel. This situation caused significant delays and required the assistance of multiple tugboats to untangle the fouled chains and allow the vessels to safely depart from the harbor.
